HABITAT DESCRIPTION:
This Rabbit is found in bottomlands of the North Carolina coastal plain (Webster et al. 1985).

Confined to wet habitats, often in brackish water areas, S. Palustris occurs in brakes, wet bottomland, brackish marshes, and sea islands (Whitaker and Hamilton 1998). Also used are swamps, marshes, and regularly saturated floodplains throughout the Coastal Plain (Webster et al. 1985). This rabbit requires homogeneous habitat conditions and fragmentation of forested bottomlands is thought to be a major problem to population stability in many areas (Whitaker and Hamilton 1998).

NATURE SERVE GLOBAL HABITAT COMMENTS:

Confined solely to marshy habitats along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. Prefers relatively undisturbed marshes (Handley 1991). May also be found around inland lakes. Availability of water is the most important factor limiting the distribution (Blair 1936). Does not occupy burrows. Good swimmer. Nests usually are in grassy vegetation adjacent to water bodies.
