HABITAT DESCRIPTION: |
|
In North Carolina, occurs in most of the coastal plain (absent from northern sections near Virginia), and portions of the lower piedmont (Martof et al. 1980). This salamander dwells in bottomland forests, swamps, and at wet sites in pine savanna (Martof et al. 1980). Logs and other heavy objects near the edge of surface water are ideal sites for shelter, but
minimal cover, such as pine-needle litter or moss in or adjacent to water is usable as well (Petranka 1998). NATURE SERVE GLOBAL HABITAT COMMENTS: Low swampy areas, margins of pine savanna ponds, bottomland forests. Hides under logs or other debris during day. In Alabama, peaks in terrestrial activity coincided with late fall-early winter
rains (Trauth 1983). Lays eggs in seepage areas or near the edge of shallow ponds on undersides of logs or leaves, under or on sphagnum or pine needles, or on rootlets beneath logs. NATURE SERVE STATE HABITAT COMMENTS: Pocosins, Carolina bays, pine flatwoods, savannas, and other wetland habitats. Usually found under leaf litter, moss
and rotting logs.
